Hampshire Disability XI

2009 season

Hampshire vs Isle of Wight (July 5th and 26th)

The Hampshire disability XI have had games against local rivals from the Isle of Wight twice in the last month. Unfortunately both have ended in defeat.

The away fixture at Shanklin CC on July 5th saw the islanders bat first after winning the toss and scoring a match winning 165 all out. The Hampshire bowlers did well to gain all 10 wickets, with the best performance coming from Jamie Legg who collected 3 and Rob Wallace with 2. The Hampshire reply with the bat never really got going and regular wickets led to a disappointing total of 101 all out. Only Gavin Randall with 38 and skipper Martin Turvey showed any resistance, with Turvey batting a full 20 overs for his 16.

The home fixture on July 26th brought the teams together again, this time at Stratfield Turgis CC. Both teams had very different line ups due to players being on international duty. The islanders were asked to bat first and the Hampshire bowling and fielding was impressive throughout. The visitors were dismissed for 113. Best performances with the ball came from Wil du Plessis, Jamie Legg and youngsters Hugo Hammond and Dan Ronaldo, claiming 3 on his debut. The Hampshire reply was poor with wickets being lost regularly. The visitors bowlers put in a fine display with the ball. Hampshire were removed fro just 69. None of the home team's batsmen were able to put together any partnerships and the game was lost as a result.

However, Hampshire are home again on Sunday August 2nd, where a win will put them into the national semi final. Their opponents on Aug 2nd will be the ever improving London Counties and will be played at Stratfield Turgis CC.

July 5th team was

Martin Turvey (capt), Ian Rogers (wk), Wil du Plessis, Jamie Legg, Dan West, Gavin Randall, Sam Graham, Rob Wallace, Paul Baldwin, Lee Jay, Ashley Humber, 12th man Jamie Petch

July 26th team was

Hampshire vs London Counties

The Hampshire disability squad travelled to Loughton on 21st June to take on London Counties in their second county championship fixture of the season. Hampshire now boast 5 players from Stratfield Turgis CC.

On winning the toss the visiting skipper decided to bat first and hope to post a formidable total to try to raise maximum points from the game. This proved successful as Hants made 251-2 from their 40 overs. Ian Rogers again looked solid and batted well for his 60 not out. Dan West made a career best and Hants record 160, before being caught and bowled with 2 overs  left.

London were never in the hunt to win the game but showed excellent resilience throughout their innings. Although they were dismissed for just 70, it took over 30 overs  for Hants to gain the 10 wickets needed for victory. All bowlers put in fine spells. The pick of them being Jamie Legg, with 5 wickets for 13 runs and youngster Hugo Hammond with 6 overs for just 8 runs and 1 wicket. Other wicket takers were Rob Wallace with 2 and Ashley Humber with 1.

This maintained a 100% start to the season with another maximum 20 point haul.

Hants next fixture is 5th July vs Isle of Wight away and the next home game at Stratfield Turgis on 26th July.

HAMPSHIRE vs WARWICKSHIRE

The Hants county disability squad began the 2009 campaign with a home fixture at Stratfield Turgis CC on May 24th.
It was a gloriously hot sunday when the toss was to be important. Home captain Martin Turvey won the toss and elected to bat first. The Hants openers set the task of about posting a good total. Gavin Randall secured a quick-fire 57 and Ian Rogers batted through to his maiden county century, finishing the innings on 102 not out. Turvey called the innings to a close after 37 of the allotted 40 overs with his side on 229 - 4. The visitors were roundly applauded for their efforts in the field in sultry conditions.
Warks then set about chasing down the impressive total set by the home side. Their batsmen contributed well but were never going to amass the runs needed for victory. Wickets fell regularly throughout the reply. The pick of the Hants bowlers was Jamie Legg with 5 wkts for just 7 runs off his spell. Debutant Ashley Humber weighed in with 3 wkts of his own as the visitors were removed for 107 in 27 overs. Other contributions with the ball came from Rob Wallace and James Higgins, who was also making his county debut.
Hampshire's next fixture is an away encounter vs London Counties on June 21st.

Congratulations to all involved in this game and especially the 3 representatives from Turgis!

Hampshire's disability squad travelled to Birmingham for the national final recently. A long coach journey in the fog on Sunday morning saw the team arrive at Walmley CC at 11am. The toss was won by Cheshire who elected to bowl on a flat but very wet wicket. As the drizzle came down the start was briefly delayed. Great patches of mud on the outfield greeted the fielders as they set about
bowling the 40 allotted overs. The Hants opening pair made an excellent start reaching 90 -0 in quick time. Ian Rogers was the first to go being given out LBW for a solid 26. His opening partner Gavin Randall, went on to make 81 before being bowled by the Cheshire skipper. This brought about a flurry of wickets with the rest of the batsmen struggling with the conditions. A couple more umpiring decisions went the way of the fielding side and Hants were bowled out for
a competitive 142.
After lunch it was Cheshire's turn to bat, in now improving conditions, to chase down the 143 needed for victory. Again the openers proved hard to remove and moved the score to 63 before losing a wicket. Hants lively attack of Rob Wallace and Randall made runs hard to come by and the scoring rate was fairly slow. Skipper Martin Turvey regularly changed the attack round and all bowlers put in fine displays. Accurate spells from Dan West, Jamie Legg, Hugo Hammond and Paul Massey brought regular wickets. This coupled with 3 superb catches in the deep from West and Randall and some excellent groung fielding from all the team made things very tense.
The game was finely balanced with Cheshire at 117 - 7. Then one the tailenders batted as only tailenders can and scored a quick 20. This meant Cheshire needed 6 to win from the remaining 4 overs. Wallace took a wicket making it 137 - 8. 3 of the last 4 overs were maidens thus leaving 5 to be scored off 6 balls. Hammond was given the ball and bowled excellently, belying his young age. The batsman at no. 10 (who had hardly hit the ball off the square previously) took a swipe and it went for 4 just eluding the hands of Randall at mid wicket. Cheshire won by 2 wkts.
In the summing up at the presentation ceremony it was stated what a magnificent game it had been in difficult
conditions. It had been a great advert for the game at any level but particularly as every player had a disability
of some sort. Medals were given to all.
